Planning for COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted all of us, the changes and impacts will continue for some time. It’s during times like this when you need you remember that you are part of a community of best practice, so don’t be alone. The Forum is your friendly, safe environment for sharing ideas, top tips and pitfalls to avoid. In this time of uncertainty its important that we collaborate and work together, bringing together ideas and use this time as an opportunity to learn and continue to raise standards.

We have designed three short series of learning academy modules, along with a top-tips & pitfalls to avoid for homeworking webinar and then a virtual networking group to help you. Phil Anderson has written an article about some of the considerations you might need to make.

This virtual Case Study Live is your chance to meet and speak with Awards finalists from Serco, NHS Business Services Authority and North East Ambulance Service. These teams and managers all have roles that were impacted by Covid, with massively increased workloads and furloughed staff but they all took the opportunity to make changes and improvements.

  • See how they stepped up with new ideas that made dramatic changes in the business.
  • Learn how raising the profile of planning can improve morale.
  • Explore the potential for collaborating beyond your function or organisation and the power of going beyond your traditional role.

Understand more about what’s happening in other organisations and sectors. Meet key stakeholders in these organisations and can network to learn from other members working on these same topics and challenges.

At the NHS Business Service Authority, multiple operations were set up to support the UK government's COVID response. They have onboarded new work with transformation in the 111 contact centre, brand-new services for keyworkers (eg PPE Hotline), support for the COVID App and Test and Trace. This team have stepped up, worked together and been relentless in their approach to helping their customers.

At Serco, the planning team demonstrated the power of collaboration beyond your own organisation. They worked with new partners to mobilise telephone support for 2.2 million vulnerable customers within day, an extraordinary rapid deployment. These partnerships created common causes with outsource competitors and Hays Travel, whose teams would otherwise have been furloughed, working together as an industry in time of need at the start of the pandemic. This amazing transformation was only possible because of established operating planning principles and skills.

Dan Lowrie, Planning Manager at North East Ambulance Service has raised the profile of planning immensely within the Trust and they are now seen as an integral part of any update or change. With a strong focus on wellbeing, he has given his team opportunities for development and learning, as well as dedicating time to his own development.
