Planning Case Study 2020: Building trusted, end-to-end planning for ambulances & paramedics at Yorkshire Ambulance Service

As part of A&E transformation that started in 2017, following a review by external consultants, YAS created a Capacity Planning & Scheduling Department to be able to deliver accurate call and response forecasts, vehicle hour requirements and implement a dynamic workforce plan with a view to providing consistent patient care for varying patient demand across the year. The Scheduling department has shifted away from rudimentary roster fulfilment to a department that plans staff shifts in line with patient demand, providing not only a better response for patients no matter when they call, but also more consistent utilisation of staff to minimise burnout. Over the last 18 months we have developed methodologies that have allowed us to model "what if?" scenarios to support decision making. We have firmly embedded ourselves and are seen as a trusted and critical function within the A&E directorate.
