Planning for COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted all of us, the changes and impacts will continue for some time. It’s during times like this when you need you remember that you are part of a community of best practice, so don’t be alone. The Forum is your friendly, safe environment for sharing ideas, top tips and pitfalls to avoid. In this time of uncertainty its important that we collaborate and work together, bringing together ideas and use this time as an opportunity to learn and continue to raise standards.

We have designed three short series of learning academy modules, along with a top-tips & pitfalls to avoid for homeworking webinar and then a virtual networking group to help you. Phil Anderson has written an article about some of the considerations you might need to make.

The Modules

The Objectives of a shift review
Will introduce you to best practice and practical guidance for conducting a shift review that supports a balanced, flexible, and sustainable workforce strategy.

Engagement for Shift Reviews
This module gives you the tools to build trust, reduce resistance, and involve people effectively when designing or changing working patterns.
You’ll learn how to engage both stakeholders and colleagues in a way that leads to stronger buy-in, better insights, and more sustainable shift solutions.

Working Patterns – Shift design
In this module, you’ll learn how to design working patterns that are robust, flexible, and rooted in real insight. From understanding your staffing requirements to navigating VUCA conditions and building flexibility through personal choice and modern technology, this course equips you with the know-how to create shift patterns that support both operational success and colleague wellbeing.

Legal compliance for working patterns
Design working patterns that are not only effective — but fully compliant.
This module gives you a clear understanding of the legal responsibilities surrounding flexible working and shift design. Whether you manage people, plan resources, or design working patterns, you’ll learn the essential legal requirements, employee rights, and best practice approaches that help you stay compliant and fair.

Communication and Branding for Shift Reviews
This module shows you how clear communication and thoughtful internal branding can dramatically improve trust, engagement, and acceptance during shift pattern reviews. When the process is transparent, well-messaged, and supported by strong visual identity, colleagues are far more likely to engage positively and provide meaningful input.

Success Measures for Shift Reviews
Know whether your shift review truly worked — and what to improve next.
This module shows you how to measure success in a way that’s balanced, evidence-based, and meaningful. Rather than relying on a single number (like shift efficiency), you’ll learn how to use a full combination of operational, people, and quality metrics to understand the real impact of your new working patterns.

Ongoing Governance for Shift Reviews
Shift reviews don’t end once new patterns go live — governance keeps everything working.
This module teaches you how to maintain, monitor, and continuously improve shift patterns through effective governance. Because customer needs evolve, employee lives change, and demand fluctuates, ongoing governance ensures your working patterns remain fair, sustainable, and operationally aligned.
